Mapping can look easy for some people, but others believe it is hard, even a bit too hard, more something for geographers or engineers than for them. They seem to think it is better to not get involved in mapping. But what if communities could map with instant messaging services they already use on a routine basis? If **they could simply and easily utilize existing apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal for mapping, wouldn't they give it a try then? The short answer is "They should." They should give it a try because it is fun, easy and effective.**

Nearly 3.5 billion people in the world already use an instant messaging app for communications on a routine basis, many of them in high vulnerability locations. In this course, you'll learn how to contribute to cleanup efforts around the world by creating and managing projects that enable people to share the location of trash points, along with associated content like text or media (including pictures) using WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal, and easily create online but powerful maps with them.

Why cleanup efforts? Because the solid waste problem is global. **World Cleanup Day aims to raise awareness of the mismanaged waste crisis by mobilizing all spheres of society to participate in cleanup actions**. Individuals, governments, corporations, and organizations are all encouraged to take part in cleanups and to find solutions to tackle mismanaged waste.
